Purchasing a franchise can take as little as 30 days and as much as 9 months as well as the time to build a new outlet (assuming you don’t purchase an existing one.) The advantage to this long wait is that it reflects the company’s high standards and determination that its franchisees are well prepared.
Cost of a franchise can vary from $500,000 and as much as $1.5 million or more for a Macdonald. $1 million to $2 million for a KFC and partner brand franchises. For a 7-Eleven the initial capital and fee required is upwards of $150K, and the total investment may range between $1 and $2 million. If you want to go out on your own, but not necessarily start a business from scratch, buying a franchise may be an option to consider. You can own your business and get support and guidance as you start out. Franchises also have a track record you can investigate. The odds of success are actually greater with an established company than with a start-up, but the downside is that franchise fees, royalties and other issues can drive up the overall costs of doing business.
Research the Food Franchise and all available opportunities. Carefully review the franchise website, and contact the target Franchise through its website or email. You will be sent forms and franchise brochures. You can also request someone call you to discuss general franchise information.
Decide whether you want to establish a new Food Franchise or buy an existing franchise. An existing franchise will have a sales track record but probably will command a good will fee to the current owner. Ask to see financial records going back several years if you are considering an existing Food Franchise. Beware if the fees for an existing operation. If it seems too low –the owner or company may know something about the area such as another similar operation is planned nearby and is trying to bail out.
Carefully review the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD). Under Federal law, you must be given 10 days to review the FDD before you sign anything or pay any money. The FDD must include names of current and former franchise owners. Contact some of them to discuss their experiences with the company. See if a current franchisee will let you observe the operations of his business.
Even though Franchising has brought growth and prosperity to the global marketplace many systems continue to excel, some have not fared so well. Information on franchisors is not readily available from general sources to improve your odds of success.
Buying a franchise is a simple and safe way to assure success. Today’s marketplace is very competitive and Franchisors, like all other business people, are competing for quality Franchisee operators.
